Stackt Market
Built entirely out of repurposed shipping containers, the Stackt Shipping Container Market is located in the heart of Toronto, servicing the eclectic Fort York / Bathurst community. Designed by LGA Architectural Partners, the market is home to various retail pop-up shops, restaurants, artist spaces, and an onsite Belgium Moon Brewery. The 27,000 ft² market occupies a brownfield site that has been leased to Stackt under a two and a half years term.
ALULA Lighting Design provided exterior lighting design throughout the site. Due to nature of Stackt ‘s temporary installation and brownfield site classificatoin, all slighting system must be mounted to above ground architecture, and have the ability to be uprooted and moved to a new location if needed, this provided a fair amount of challenges.
To overcome these challenges the team went with modular lighting that could be mounted directly to the containers. The container’s front mounted linear LEDs served a dual purpose - first to highlight the entrance of each container / store, and second to provide sufficient spill light for pathway lighting throughout the market. Catenary cable suspended lighting provided overhead ambient light for long distances between containers and open space.
LED lighting was used throughout Stackt, allowing for maximum energy savings and ease of maintenance. A combination of warm 2700K and 3000K colour temperature was utilized throughout the site to provide illumination which promoted an inviting space for visitors, creating a one-of-a-kind and buzzing market atmosphere.
