Ajax Library Lighting Upgrade

The Ajax Public Library is an architectural beacon constructed in 2002 that is located in Ajax, Ontario.  The community facility was over lit and difficult to maintain, driving the library to upgrade its lighting to suit patrons and staff impeded by the harsh visual environment.

ALULA Lighting Design worked in collaboration with Lebel & Bouliane to improve the quality of the visual environment and enhance energy efficiency while maintaining the unique architectural aesthetic, which features 15’ ceilings and regressed architectural slots. The new design was modelled using illumination software and developed to preserve the architectural integrity, project a visually continuous environment, minimize glare and reduced the connected load to 33% of the original load. Community and staff now enjoy a soft, visually comfortable environment that maximizes the library experience.

The project received an Award of Merit for the IES Illumination Award for Energy and Environmental Lighting Design in 2018

Location: Ajax, Canada
Architect: Lebel & Bouliane
Photographer: Scott Norsworthy
Completion: 2016
