Role

We are looking for Junior to Intermediate Lighting Designers to join our Toronto office! 

The Lighting Designer will work collaboratively with the Lighting Team at ALULA in the full range of tasks and responsibilities required to complete the Lighting Design for a wide range of projects.  This includes producing concept presentations, lighting layouts, lighting calculations, fixture specifications, and contract administration work (i.e. shop drawings reviews, site visits and fixture aiming).  This applies to ALULA direct projects as well as internal lighting support for The HIDI Group's base building / tenancy department’s projects.    

Responsibilities

  • Participate in daily design and production tasks with ALULA team members on various projects, in various stages of design and construction.

  • Compiling lighting design documentations, including presentations using InDesign with graphics and text, lighting layout drawings utilizing CAD/Revit, and lighting specifications (luminaire schedules, cutsheets).

  • Performing lighting calculations to verify lighting design and targets, lighting power density calculations, and simple budget calculations.

  • Knowledge of the lighting industry, including luminaire trends and research, mock-up and assessments, as well as communicating with manufacturer, reps, and clients.

  • Participate in the occasional on-site (in town or out of town) lighting surveys, meetings, mock-up sessions, or final fixture aiming/focusing.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Degree in Lighting Design or associated field (Architectural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architecture, Interior Design, Theatrical Lighting)

  • 1-4 years of Lighting Design (or associated Lighting – related industry) 

  • Enjoys collaborating in a team environment

  • Strong communication skills (written, verbal, and visual)

  • Ability to think independently, problem solve and work under pressure

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

  • AutoCAD

  • AGI32 – Creating 3D calculation model, running lighting studies, evaluation of luminaire photometry

  • Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

  • Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign)

  • Revit (great to have, not a must)

  • Participate in industry related professional organizations (IALD, IES, etc.)

  • Certified Lighting Designer (CLD) (great to have, not a must)

  • NCQLP Lighting Certification (LC) (great to have, not a must)

  • Fluent in spoken and written English

  • Must be eligible to work in Canada
